Write for people first

Write each page to answer a question your audience already has, with something only you can add. Answer five people-first questions in the page's brief before it is published.

How to do it

Google's guide to helpful, reliable, people-first content gives questions to ask of every page. The brief answers five of them. Does the page offer original information, research or analysis? Would you write it for your existing audience if search engines did not exist? Will a reader leave knowing enough to reach their goal? Did an expert write or review it? Is it made mainly to attract search visits? Add what only you have, such as your own data, photos, prices, test results or customer cases. A summary of other people's pages adds little. Pick the topic from Keep a keyword map from topic to one page.

Examples

YAML example

page: /guides/oak-floor-turning-grey
original_information: yes # photos and moisture readings from 40 floors we treated
written_for_existing_audience: yes
reader_can_act_on_it: yes
expert_wrote_or_reviewed: yes # Maria Lind, floor fitter since 2009
made_mainly_for_search: no

How to check

Every new page's brief records the five answers. The page is published only when the first four are yes and the last is no.
