Read today's results page to judge intent
Before you write for a phrase, search it and read the first results page. Label its intent as informational, commercial, transactional or navigational, and plan the page type that ranks there.
How to do it
The results page shows what the search engine believes people want. Guides and answered questions mean informational intent. Comparisons, "best" lists and reviews mean commercial intent. Product pages, prices and booking forms mean transactional intent. Results from one brand mean navigational intent, so leave that phrase to the brand. When the top ten are all guides, a sales page will not rank there. Write the guide and link it to the sales page, as Cover every stage of the buyer's journey says. Search signed out, in a private window, set to the country you sell in. Results change, so record the date.
How to check
Every phrase in the keyword map has one of the four intent labels and the date its results page was read. Its planned page type matches most of the top ten results.
