Earn links with work worth citing
Earn links by publishing things other sites want to cite, such as your own data, a free tool, a full guide or local news. Then tell the few people who would use it, once each.
How to do it
Google's Search Essentials ask you to tell people about your site in the communities you belong to. Bing says links should be earned through useful content. Ideas that suit a small business are a yearly survey of your own prices, a free calculator and a full guide to a common question. A partner or supplier page that lists you and a story for the local press work too. Write to the people who already cover the topic with a short note that says what is new. Never offer money, a gift or a swap for the link. When a link is paid for, label it as Label every paid link says.
How to check
An outreach log lists each contact with the date, the page offered and the outcome. No entry records a payment, a gift or a link swap in return for a link.
