Avoid Open source
Avoid the MinIO community edition
Do not start new self-hosted object storage on the MinIO community edition, and plan a move off it.
Cost
Open source. AGPLv3, but no longer maintained.
How to do it
MinIO's public repository was archived on 25 April 2026, and its README says it is no longer maintained. That fails the release test, so security holes found from now on stay open. The source remains under AGPLv3, but the project points users to its paid editions. Your code keeps working after a move, because it talks to the S3 API. For storage on your own servers, move to SeaweedFS as Use the S3 API for files and SeaweedFS to host them says.
Examples
Using these examples: they show one way to follow this rule. Keep the behaviour and the check, not the syntax. Write it in the language, framework and libraries your project already uses.
Shell example
rclone sync old-minio:invoices new-store:invoices --checksum
JavaScript example
const storage = new S3Client({ endpoint: process.env.STORAGE_ENDPOINT, region: process.env.STORAGE_REGION, forcePathStyle: true });
Python example
storage = boto3.client("s3", endpoint_url=os.environ["STORAGE_ENDPOINT"])
