Agent Wranglers

Avoid

Adding a fee for paying by consumer card in the EU

Never add a charge for paying with an EU consumer card or a SEPA transfer or direct debit. Build the payment cost into the price instead.

Applies when

The project it takes payments, or it has users in the EU.

How to do it

Article 62(4) of PSD2 forbids charges for payment instruments whose interchange fees are capped by Regulation (EU) 2015/751. That covers most consumer debit and credit cards issued in the EU. It also covers SEPA credit transfers and direct debits. Article 62(5) lets member states forbid or limit other surcharges too. A fee that appears only on the payment step also breaks the final price shown, as Show prices the way each market expects says. Commercial cards and payments outside the EU follow other rules, so ask your acquirer before you charge for them.
