# Refund in the currency the customer paid

- Rule: Refund the same amount in the same currency the customer paid. Carry any exchange difference yourself.
- Check: A test charges 1,200 EUR minor units, changes the test exchange rate, then refunds in full. The refund is 1,200 EUR minor units, and the ledger has one exchange difference row.
- Applies when: The project takes payments.
- How: A customer who paid 12 EUR expects 12 EUR back, whatever the rate did since. Refund through the original charge, as [Refund through the provider with a key and a reason](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/payments/refunds-disputes-and-fraud/provider-refunds.md) says, and the provider keeps the currency. Never refund a converted amount in your own currency. The difference in your settlement currency goes to the exchange gain or loss line from [Record the rate and settled amount of every charge](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/payments/currencies-and-settlement/settlement-amounts.md).
