# Use one h1 and keep headings in order

By Erik Bergstedt, Agent Wranglers. Updated 2026-10-20.

- Level: Required
- Chapter: [SEO](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/website/seo)
- Rule: Give every page exactly one `h1`, and a heading outline that never skips a level. Never use headings just for their look.
- How: Use one `h1` to name the page, `h2` for sections and `h3` inside them. Never pick a level for its size. Style it instead. Fail the build when a page does not have exactly one `h1`.
- Check: The build counts `<h1>` on every page and fails on anything but one. axe `heading-order` passes.

Example:

```html
<h1>Pricing</h1>
  <h2>Plans</h2>
    <h3>Starter</h3>
    <h3>Team</h3>
  <h2>Questions</h2>
```
