# Let people see and delete their data

- Rule: Give people a working way to get a copy of their data, correct it and have it deleted, and answer within one month.
- How: Offer a clear contact or a self-service page, and check who is asking before you hand over data. Keep a map of where personal data lives, keyed by the person's ID, in every table and store. Build one tested export function and one delete function on that map. Export in a common format such as JSON or CSV. Delete from the live system, then from backups as they expire, within the period in [backup retention](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/operations/disaster-recovery/backup-retention). Keep a log of erased person IDs, never their data. After any restore from backup, run the delete function again for every ID in that log, so a restore never brings an erased person back. GDPR Article 12 sets one month to answer requests under Articles 15 to 22. It allows two more months for complex requests if you tell the person why within the first month. - Check: Create a test person with data in every store. Ask for their data and then for its deletion. The export is complete. A search of every store finds no trace of their ID or email, except records the law requires. Then restore a backup taken before the deletion. The same search again finds no trace, and the erasure log holds their ID only.
