# Know which accessibility law applies

By Erik Bergstedt, Agent Wranglers. Updated 2026-10-20.

- Level: Recommended
- Chapter: [Accessibility](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/website/accessibility)
- Rule: Find out which accessibility laws cover the site. Meet WCAG 2.2 AA, which includes the WCAG 2.1 AA level most laws point to.
- How: In the EU, the European Accessibility Act has applied since 28 June 2025. It covers online shops, consumer banking, e-books, passenger transport booking and similar services. Microenterprises offering services are exempt. Its standard EN 301 549 V3.2.1 uses WCAG 2.1 AA. V4.1.1, published in September 2026, moves to WCAG 2.2 AA once cited in the EU Official Journal. In the US, courts apply the ADA to websites. A 2024 rule requires WCAG 2.1 AA for state and local government sites, with deadlines from April 2027. Publish an accessibility statement with known gaps and a contact. See also [meet the European Accessibility Act as a legal duty](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/compliance/product-and-sector-laws/accessibility-act-duty).
- Check: The site has an accessibility statement with a date, the WCAG version and level it meets, its known gaps and a way to report problems.
