# Show where the page sits

For AI agents: the [site map](https://agentwranglers.se/llms.txt) lists everything here, and this page sits under [Site structure](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/seo/site-structure.md).

By [Agent Wranglers](https://agentwranglers.se/authors/agent-wranglers.md). Updated 2026-10-22.

- ID: SEO-17
- Level: Recommended
- Chapter: [Site structure](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/seo/site-structure.md)
- Rule: Show a breadcrumb trail on inner pages, with the current page not linked. Mark it up as a matching `BreadcrumbList`.
- Check: A test reads the visible trail and the JSON-LD on every inner page. The names and URLs match in the same order.
- How: Render the trail as a `nav` with an ordered list. Show the current page as plain text with `aria-current="page"`. Use the same names and URLs in the `BreadcrumbList`. The last item may leave out `item`. Add the rest of the page's markup as [Describe each page for machines](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/seo/search-result-appearance/structured-data.md) says.

## Examples

**Using these examples:** they show one way to follow this rule. Keep the behaviour and the check, not the syntax. Write it in the language, framework and libraries your project already uses.

### HTML example

```html
<nav aria-label="Breadcrumb">
  <ol>
    <li><a href="/">Home</a></li>
    <li><a href="/services">Services</a></li>
    <li aria-current="page">Website review</li>
  </ol>
</nav>
```

### JSON example

```json
{
  "@type": "BreadcrumbList",
  "itemListElement": [
    { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 1, "name": "Home", "item": "https://example.com/" },
    { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 2, "name": "Services", "item": "https://example.com/services" },
    { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 3, "name": "Website review" }
  ]
}
```
