By Erik Bergstedt, Agent Wranglers. Updated 2026-10-20.

- Level: Recommended
- Chapter: [Alerts and on-call](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/operations/alerts-and-on-call)
- Rule: Put named people on a rota with a backup, hand over between shifts, and give time back after busy nights.
- How: Keep shifts to a week or less, with a primary and a secondary. Write a short handover note at the end of each shift. Track pages per shift, and fix the noisiest causes first. With one person, the rota is that person plus a backup channel and a stated reply time.
- Check: The paging tool shows a primary and a backup for every hour of the next month. The last handover note is less than a week old. With one person, the backup channel and the reply time are written down.
