# Watch the service from outside

By Erik Bergstedt, Agent Wranglers. Updated 2026-10-20.

- Level: Required
- Chapter: [Running in production](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/engineering/running-in-production)
- Rule: Watch the service from outside your own network, and alert a person when it stops answering.
- How: Point an outside monitor, such as UptimeRobot or Better Stack, at the [health check](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/engineering/build-test-and-deploy/health-check-and-rollback) and the home page at least every 5 minutes. Treat anything but 200 as down. Alert by email or phone, and host any status page somewhere else.
- Check: Stop the database on staging. The health check answers 503, and the monitor sends an alert within its interval.
