# Keep proof of consent

- Level: Required

- Rule: Send marketing email only to people who agreed to it, and keep a record of when, where and to what they agreed.
- How: Store the time, the form or page, the exact wording shown and the source address for every opt-in. Use confirmed opt-in, where the person clicks a link before they get mail. Keep consent for each topic separate. Never treat a purchase or an account as consent to marketing, unless your law allows it and you offered a clear way out.
- Check: Pick a random subscriber. The system shows when and how they agreed, with the wording, within a minute.
