# Cut a seam before testing hard code

For AI agents: the [site map](https://agentwranglers.se/llms.txt) lists everything here, and this page sits under [Characterization tests](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/codebase-takeover/characterization-tests.md).

By [Agent Wranglers](https://agentwranglers.se/authors/agent-wranglers.md). Updated 2026-10-22.

- ID: TKO-10
- Level: Recommended
- Chapter: [Characterization tests](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/codebase-takeover/characterization-tests.md)
- Rule: When code reads the clock, the network, the database or a global directly, make the smallest change that lets a test pass that dependency in. Make no other change in the same step.
- Check: The characterization tests run with the network turned off and a fixed clock, and give the same result on 10 runs in a row.
- How: A seam is a place where a test can swap a dependency without editing the code around it. The safest seams add a parameter with today's value as its default, so every caller keeps working. Do this before the characterization tests, then pin the behaviour, then refactor. The end state is [Fake the clock and the network in unit tests](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/testing/unit-tests/unit-deterministic.md) and [Depend on abstractions at the edges](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/architecture/solid-and-dry/dependency-inversion.md).

## Examples

**Using these examples:** they show one way to follow this rule. Keep the behaviour and the check, not the syntax. Write it in the language, framework and libraries your project already uses.

### JavaScript example

```js
// Before: the test cannot control the date
export function isTrialOver(account) {
  return Date.now() > account.trialEndsAt;
}
// After: callers stay the same, tests pass a fixed time
export function isTrialOver(account, now = Date.now()) {
  return now > account.trialEndsAt;
}
```

### Python example

```python
# Before: the test cannot control the date
def is_trial_over(account):
    return datetime.now(UTC) > account.trial_ends_at
# After: callers stay the same, tests pass a fixed time
def is_trial_over(account, now=None):
    return (now or datetime.now(UTC)) > account.trial_ends_at
```
