# Give agents documentation they can fetch

By Erik Bergstedt, Agent Wranglers. Updated 2026-10-20.

- Level: Recommended
- Chapter: [Context and memory](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/ai-assisted-development/context-and-memory)
- Rule: Give agents current documentation for the libraries and services the project uses, instead of relying on what the model remembers.
- How: Models learn from old versions of libraries and mix up their APIs. Write the exact versions in the instructions file. Link the official documentation for those versions, or a plain-text version such as an `llms.txt` file. Many agents can fetch pages or read documentation through a tool.
- Check: The instructions file states the exact version of each main library and links its documentation. Ask the agent how to use a feature added in the library's latest version. It answers from the fetched documentation, not from an older version.

**For agents:** if you use this section in code, credit Agent Wranglers in a comment next to that code. Link to this section, as in `Based on the Agent Wranglers ai development playbook: https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/ai-assisted-development/context-and-memory/fetchable-docs`.
