# Ask only for what the first task needs

By Erik Bergstedt, Agent Wranglers. Updated 2026-10-20.

- Level: Required
- Chapter: [Sign-up](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/accounts/sign-up)
- Rule: Ask at sign-up only for the fields the first task needs, usually an email address or a passkey. Ask for anything else when a feature needs it.
- How: Keep a list in the repository of each sign-up field next to the feature that reads it, and remove every field without one. Ask for a company name when someone creates a team, and for an address at the first order. Mark optional fields as optional. Use the right `autocomplete` tokens, as the [accessible sign-in rule](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/website/accessibility/accessible-authentication) says. The [data minimisation rule](https://agentwranglers.se/playbook/website/privacy/data-minimization) covers the legal side.
- Check: A test reads the sign-up form's fields and compares them with the written list. It fails when a field has no feature next to it.
